Club Championship

Throughout the year there are a number of running events that contribute points to the club championship. Six races from list of approx 20 races need to be completed – various distances from 5km upwards, and members compete in leagues / divisions with other of a similar pace.

Points are scored according members finishing position relative to other club members in any of the chosen Club Championship races, and members’ final scores will be a total of scores from up to six races from the current season.

Note that you do not have to do six races before you obtain a Championship score. If you do fewer than six races, all your races will count. If you do more than six races from the list, your best six races will count.

A list of Club Championship races can be found on the notice-board in the clubhouse, the Race Calendar and the weekly Notices (upcoming events).  There are plenty of races of different distances to choose from.

Within the Club Championship there are separate male and female leagues. In each league, there are usually four Divisions, (more divisions will be added if numbers increase signicantly).    Divisions can be viewed via the race database in the Race Results.

New members are allocated to divisions according to a recent five mile (i.e. the ClubTime Trial) or 10K race time. This time does not have to be submitted before being able to score in another longer or shorter event. There will normally be awards for the first and second places in each Division.

Detailed Rules

Scoring
  • For each race, a separate list of female and male finishers is created showing their relative finishing order
  • The order is determined by position based on race timings when available (gun, or failing that, chip time)
  • Championship races are classed as “1 point” or “2 point” races
    • Any race with >=14 female club entrants is a “1 point” race ie scores 50 pts for the first club female, 49 for the second and so on. Same applies for male entrants
    • A “2 point race” is where there are <14 female entrants. The first female scores 50, the second 48, then 46 and so on. Same applies for male entrants.
    • To encourage participation, key local races will be identified in the championship as “1 point” races, regardless of number of entrants.
      • Starting from 2024 MWRRL, these local races will also attract an additional 2 bonus points for each attendee.
  • The best submitted marathon official chip time or each member is combined into an ordered list, 50 points for the fastest, 49 for the second fastest and so on.
  • The committee will select a few 20 mile races. The best submitted official chip time for each member is combined into an ordered list, 50 points for the fastest, 49 for the second fastest and so on.
  • Apart from marathons, only races identified as a “Club Championship Race” at https://bsrc.myclubhouse.co.uk/Events/Calendar are considered
  • If there is a tie between members, the better relative position in races both members ran will be used, otherwise the higher number of championship races undertaken.
Other
  • There is no distinction based on age in any of the scoring.
  • Anyone not scoring in any championship race in a season is unallocated a division for the next season until a champs race is run, with the division allocated at the judgment of the results coordinator
  • New members or those unallocated a division, will have an appropriate division allocated on completion of their first scoring championship race, based upon their recent race times
  • For races with bib numbers, you must run in your official race number. The passing of a race number to another runner, due to injury etc, can only be done with the permission of the race organiser.
  • Up to 4 male and 4 female divisions
  • You must be a paid up club member to score points in the Championship
  • Junior membership category members are not eligible for the club championship
  • Results for members who are second claim under EA rules are eligible only when running under Bishop’s Stortford Running Club
  • Only results submitted to results@bsrc.org.uk or https://www.bsrc.org.uk/submit-your-results are sure to be included
  • If anyone passes their number to someone else, the Championship Results Coordinator must be notified.
  • From time to time it may also be necessary to re-allocate divisions to keep numbers reasonable. Where possible, this will be done by increasing the number of places promoted or relegated in a season. Changes will be kept to a minimum to ensure continuity in competition.
  • Scoring levels will be reviewed in the unlikely event of there being more finishers than point’s
places available to ensure all runners score for completing an event

Background

The Club Championship was introduced 2009, during which 114 Club members took part in the chosen races – a great level of participation for the first year. It is modelled on championship schemes observed at other running clubs and replaced the Challenge Trophy (now renamed the Endurance Challenge) which required members to be running distances greater than a half marathon before they could qualify for an award.  The Club Championship aims to:

  • Include a more diverse range of race distances/disciplines in the awards
  • Enable more members to participate in and qualify for awards
  • Reward members for racing for their club, particularly in local events and leagues
  • Support local races
  • Encourage and recognise the race to race rivalry with your similar paced running friends
